About Southern Maine Agency on Aging as a CBO Partner

For more than four decades Southern Maine Agency on Aging (SMAA) has provided the resources, programs and people to ensure that older adults and adults living with disabilities in Cumberland and York counties maintain their vitality well past the age of sixty.

Founded in 1973, under the authority of the federal Older Americans Act, SMAA is a non-profit organization dedicated to planning and implementing social services for adults aged 60 and older.

SMAA provides many services and programs for older adults and adults with disabilities on a variety of issues, be they financial, medical, or personal. SMAA offers seminars to help navigate Medicare Education, Caregiving, Advance Health Care Planning and Wellness.  We also deliver important nutrition through the Meals on Wheels Program to homebound seniors and adults with disabilities, while also offering this population the opportunity to stay active in the community via participation or volunteerism.

While our programs and services are most frequently directed to the needs of adults age 60 plus as well as the disabled, many of our programs are well suited to support a spectrum of ages. These programs are being offered at businesses, within healthcare entities, and in municipalities.  Seminars brought on site at employer headquarters, hospitals, and within healthcare community spaces make it very convenient to access them.  Very often these programs are part of a benefits package or utilize a wellness budget.  Hospital sponsorship of the programs links hospitals to serving the needs of their surrounding community.

Why Partner with SMAA?

Businesses, the healthcare industry, and municipalities can benefit from partnering with a Community Based Organization (CBO) like SMAA. As a CBO, we're dedicated to:

  • Improving quality care outcomes

  • Increasing employee, patient, and community member engagement and satisfaction

  • Focusing on the social determinants of health

  • Being experts in evaluating needs and connecting individuals and families with available community support services, entitlements, and benefits

  • Creating and fostering deep, trusted relationships within the community

  • Generating evidence that supports a return on investment and possessing a willingness to pilot and measure - we are data centric and outcome driven

  • Maintaining and upholding HIPAA compliance

  • Fostering a cycle of reinvestment into the community. Contract fees and donations cover costs and afford investment back into SMAA programs.

Geographic Locations Served

While SMAA serves Cumberland and York Counties, we have a strong relationship with the other Area Agencies on Aging within Maine. This allows us to bring our partners in to help serve regions outside of Cumberland and York Counties. When it comes to educational seminars, we are open to webinars allowing off-site participants to join in.
